We write in our own words
No press-release talk. If a sentence sounds like it came out of an office circular, we cross it out and write it the way we speak.
About · Founded 2026یمبرزال
Yemberzal is a Kashmiri youth-led collective at Aligarh Muslim University. We read together, put our culture on show on hostel lawns, and publish student writing so newcomers far from home have a room of their own.
The name
The first spring flower in the Kashmir Valley, known on sight in every home.
The flower comes back each spring in the valley while the air is still cold. It carries a familiar memory across homes, hostel rooms, and late-night kitchens.
We chose the name in 2026 because every Kashmiri student knows it immediately. Say the word in a strange city and someone looks up and smiles.
Why we started · 2026
In early 2026, a few of us kept meeting at tea stalls around campus and talking about the stories and poems we missed from home. The circle grew because the need was obvious: a first-year student arriving at AMU should find people who know where she is from within her first month.
Going into the 2026-27 term, the rhythm stays simple. Small sittings on the grass, honest conversation, and something worth reading afterward. This website exists so the next batch can find us without relying on luck.
Where you will find us
What we believe
Habits we practice at every sitting, not slogans on a poster.
No press-release talk. If a sentence sounds like it came out of an office circular, we cross it out and write it the way we speak.
Every photograph, voice note, and name on this site is here because the person in it said yes to this specific page.
Ten students sitting on the grass arguing over a story matters more to us than a packed auditorium with a chief guest.
First-year students hold real roles in 2026-27. Seniors help with the first sitting and then step back.
Timeline · 2026 to 2026-27
Three steps from nine students at a tea stall to an active campus collective.
Nine students met for tea near Zakir Husain College to talk about the books and the poems they missed from home. Yemberzal started that evening.
The archive, the reading list, and the six activities are in place. Our first evening is planned for February 2027, and everything after it builds on that one.
This site went live for the 2026-27 academic year, with ten active members and eight role-holders across four departments.
